Synopsis

The field of phytopharmacology has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent decades, evolving from the traditional use of medicinal plants toward a scientifically grounded discipline that integrates natural-product chemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, biotechnology, and modern drug-delivery approaches. Contemporary Phytopharmacology: Bioactive Natural Products in Chronic Disease Management has been conceived to provide a comprehensive perspective on the therapeutic potential of naturally derived bioactive compounds in the prevention and management of chronic diseases. Chronic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, metabolic syndrome, and chronic hepatic and renal conditions represent major global health challenges. Their complex and multifactorial pathophysiology often involves oxidative stress, persistent inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, altered cellular signaling, insulin resistance, immune dysregulation, and epigenetic changes. These interconnected mechanisms have stimulated increasing scientific interest in natural products as sources of pharmacologically active molecules capable of acting on multiple biological targets. Plants, marine organisms, fungi, and other natural sources contain a remarkable diversity of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, lignans, steroids, polysaccharides, peptides, and other specialized metabolites. Many of these compounds have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and anticancer activities. Importantly, contemporary research is increasingly moving beyond the simple identification of individual compounds toward understanding their molecular mechanisms, pharmacokinetic behavior, synergistic interactions, bioavailability, and potential for integration into evidence-based therapeutic strategies. This book aims to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern scientific investigation. It emphasizes the importance of advanced phytochemical characterization, molecular-target identification, in-vitro and in-vivo pharmacological evaluation, computational approaches, and innovative drug-delivery technologies in translating promising natural products into clinically relevant interventions. Special attention is given to mechanisms such as modulation of NF-κB, Nrf2, PI3K/Akt, MAPK, AMPK, JAK/STAT, and other signaling pathways that contribute to chronic disease progression. We hope that Contemporary Phytopharmacology: Bioactive Natural Products in Chronic Disease Management will serve as a useful academic and scientific resource and encourage further interdisciplinary research into nature-derived therapeutics. Ultimately, the future of phytopharmacology lies in combining traditional wisdom with rigorous experimental science, advanced analytical technologies, molecular pharmacology, and evidence-based clinical research to unlock the full therapeutic potential of natural products.
